Joseph Kosinski, the acclaimed director behind Top Gun: Maverick and Tron: Legacy, is set to take the helm for a new Miami Vice film, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. The screenplay will be crafted by Dan Gilroy, known for his work on Nightcrawler, who is building upon an initial draft penned by Top Gun: Maverick's Eric Warren Singer. Recently, Gilroy has been engaged in writing multiple episodes for the Star Wars series Andor, a project spearheaded by his brother, Tony Gilroy.
Miami Vice, the iconic NBC police drama, was created by Anthony Yerkovich and produced by Michael Mann. The series, which aired from 1984 to 1989, starred Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as the stylish Miami detectives Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs. It is celebrated for revolutionizing television with its groundbreaking visual and auditory style.
The franchise was previously brought to the big screen in 2006, directed by Michael Mann and featuring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell in the lead roles.
While details about the new film are sparse at this point, it's confirmed that Miami Vice won't be Kosinski's immediate follow-up to his upcoming film F1, set for release in June. This timeline should afford Kosinski ample opportunity to immerse himself in the project and perhaps even choose the perfect Ferrari to embody the film's signature style.
