These five cards form what is known as a "cycle," sharing common design elements across each of Magic's colors. They are all affordable, common-rarity creatures, each featuring an ability linked to one of Tarkir's three-color clans, along with another ability that allows you to convert mana into a color from that clan.

Wizards of the Coast Senior Game Designer Adam Prosak sheds light on the set's design, stating, “Three-color limited environments need quite a bit of mana fixing at all rarities. We wanted many decks to have access to mana fixing, so we developed numerous designs to address mana issues. These creatures not only allow you to develop your board presence but also enhance your mana development simultaneously—unlike tapped lands, which only provide mana and can cause you to fall behind.”

Senior Worldbuilding Designer Lauren Bond shares insights into the narrative aspect of the set, noting that while the mechanics were the initial focus, common cards often serve as a canvas for showcasing the world of a set. "The passionate, action-oriented monks of the Jeskai, the Whispers employing Temur magic, Nagas in the Sultai as jungle protectors and avengers, Mardu's military prowess with supporting roles, and the Abzan clerics working to regrow the lost kin trees," she explains, highlighting the evolution of the clans since their last appearance.

Some recent Magic sets have faced criticism for leaning too heavily on tropes or thematic gimmicks, even when revisiting previous planes. However, Tarkir: Dragonstorm stands out for its direct and authentic return to Tarkir. Senior Worldbuilding Art Director Forrest Schehl acknowledges the importance of such feedback to Wizards of the Coast. He explains, "The top-level pitch for Tarkir was established well before the release of Murders at Karlov Manor and the subsequent sets, and it remained unchanged. We aimed to combine Dragons and Clans in a fresh way, with the Dragonstorms being a defining feature of the plane. Lauren and I felt the pressure to get this right from the start; we always wanted to build the next chapter of this beloved plane with authenticity and substance."

Tarkir: Dragonstorm is currently available for preorder, with the set slated for release in both physical and digital formats on April 11. In-store prerelease events will begin on April 4.
