In *Atomfall*, upgrading your weapons not only enhances their performance with better stats but also adds a sleek new skin, and can even unlock the coveted 'Make do and mend' trophy. Here's a detailed guide on how to upgrade your arsenal in *Atomfall*.
To start crafting upgraded weapons in *Atomfall*, you must first unlock the Gunsmithing skill. This essential survival skill is learned by reading the Crafting Manual. While finding these skill-related books can be challenging, there's a direct path to obtaining this one.
Visit Morris Wick at the Village Shop in Wyndham, who possesses a copy of the Crafting Manual. However, acquiring it from him isn't straightforward and involves some strategic blackmail and bartering. Upon entering St. Katherine’s Church, you'll uncover a recent murder of a character named Maisie, with the Vicar eager to cover it up. Further investigation will lead you to evidence implicating Morris in the crime.
You can find this crucial evidence in the Brewery Cellar, located at coordinates 30.5 E, 80.5 N in the west of Wyndham Village. Enter through the cellar door near the ruined building and search for the note titled “Kill the One They Call Maisie”. After obtaining this note, return to Morris’ Village Shop at 33.3 E, 79.9 N. Engage him in conversation, applying pressure without overt threats, until you reach the “Bargaining” dialogue option. Choosing this will result in Morris handing over the Crafting Manual in exchange for your silence.
Alternatively, you can find the Crafting Manual in the D Section of The Interchange, though this method is more time-consuming and difficult.
Once you have the Crafting Manual and have read it, you'll need to spend 7 Training Stimulants to acquire the Gunsmith skill, which unlocks the recipes for crafting upgraded weapons. These stimulants can be found in B.A.R.D. structures such as Bunkers and The Interchange.
With the Crafting Manual and Gunsmith skill in hand, you're ready to craft weapon upgrades. When you obtain a weapon, you unlock the recipe to craft its next highest tier, progressing from Rusty to Stock, and finally to Pristine. To upgrade a weapon, you'll need two units of the weapon in its previous tier, along with specific amounts of Gun Oil and Scrap, which can vary depending on the weapon.
For instance, to upgrade the Falkirk Battle Rifle to Pristine (as shown above), you will need 2 Falkirk Battle Rifles (Stock), 3 Gun Oil, and 6 Scrap. These materials are most commonly found at military installations, such as Protocol Camps. If you plan on frequently upgrading your weapons, consider investing in the Deep Pockets survival skill to increase your capacity for carrying crafting supplies.
Upgrading a weapon to Pristine for the first time will reward you with the 'Make do and mend' Achievement or Trophy.
