The writer of the Wesley Snipes' Blade trilogy, David S. Goyer, has expressed his willingness to assist Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige in revitalizing the stalled Mahershala Ali-led MCU reboot of the iconic vampire hunter. The project, initially announced with great fanfare at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, has faced numerous setbacks and is currently off Marvel's release schedule, with no new date set.
Recent statements from various creatives involved in the project have shed light on its troubled journey. Rapper and artist Flying Lotus, who was set to compose the film's music, revealed on X / Twitter that the project had fallen through, expressing doubt about its revival. Costume designer Ruth E. Carter, during an appearance on The John Campea Show, confirmed her involvement before the production collapsed, noting the film was intended to be set in the 1920s, promising unique costume and production design.
Actor Delroy Lindo, who was attached to star alongside Ali, shared his disappointment with Entertainment Weekly, recounting how the project initially seemed promising and inclusive but ultimately derailed. The film has seen multiple directors come and go, including Yann Demange and Bassam Tariq, yet none have managed to steer the project to completion.
Despite the setbacks, Marvel Studios remains committed to the character. In a November 2024 interview with Omelete, Feige reaffirmed their dedication to bringing Blade to the MCU, emphasizing their love for the character and Mahershala Ali's interpretation of him. Meanwhile, the MCU film Deadpool & Wolverine, featuring a cameo by Wesley Snipes as Blade, grossed $1.3 billion globally. Ryan Reynolds, who stars as Deadpool, has advocated for a send-off film for Snipes' Blade similar to Hugh Jackman's Logan, acknowledging the original Blade's pivotal role in paving the way for superhero films, including the X-Men and the MCU itself.
Reynolds is also reportedly in the early stages of developing a Deadpool and X-Men ensemble film, where Deadpool would not be the central focus but share the limelight with other X-Men characters, as per a report by THR.
