Wizards of the Coast has recently taken action against a fan-created mod for Stardew Valley, known as "Baldur's Village," which integrates characters from Baldur's Gate 3 into the popular farming simulation game. Despite earlier public praise from Larian Studios CEO Sven Vincke, who commended the mod for its creativity and the love put into its creation, the mod was hit with a DMCA takedown notice from Wizards of the Coast, the rights holder of Dungeons & Dragons and Baldur's Gate.
The "Baldur's Village" mod was released earlier this month and quickly garnered attention, including Vincke's enthusiastic endorsement on Twitter. However, the mod's availability was short-lived due to the subsequent DMCA action. A spokesperson from Nexus Mods, where the mod was hosted, expressed hope that the takedown might be an oversight by Wizards of the Coast, who often employ external agencies to monitor IP violations.
In response to the situation, Vincke took to Twitter again to voice his support for the mod, highlighting the delicate nature of IP protection. He emphasized that fan mods like "Baldur's Village" serve as a testament to the appeal of the original work and should not be treated as commercial infringements. "Free quality fan mods highlighting your characters in other game genres are proof your work resonates and a unique form of word of mouth," Vincke stated, expressing hope that the issue could be resolved amicably.
This takedown might be indicative of a broader strategy by Wizards of the Coast to protect their intellectual property, especially in light of upcoming announcements about the Baldur's Gate franchise. At the recent Game Developers Conference, hints were dropped about forthcoming plans for the IP. It remains to be seen whether the removal of the Stardew Valley mod was a deliberate move in this context or an error that will be corrected. Wizards of the Coast has been contacted for further comment on the matter.
