Xbox Mystery Game Announcement Set for January 23

Summary

  • Xbox's Developer Direct next week will showcase 4 games, with the identity of the fourth game currently a mystery.
  • The mystery game is hinted to be a new entry in a legendary Japanese IP.
  • Some possibilities for the mystery game include Resident Evil, Persona, and a new Ninja Gaiden. However, it could turn out to be something different.

Xbox's third-annual Developer Direct is set to go live next week, sparking excitement and speculation among gaming enthusiasts. Since its inception in January 2023, the Developer Direct has become a pivotal event for Xbox, offering fans direct insights from developers about upcoming titles. Notably, the first Developer Direct saw the unexpected release of Tango Gameworks' acclaimed Hi-Fi Rush, cementing the event's reputation as a must-watch. Last year's showcase featured in-depth looks at Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and even included a segment from Square Enix on Visions of Mana.

Scheduled for January 23, this year's Developer Direct will highlight three anticipated 2025 releases: Doom: The Dark Ages, South of Midnight, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 by Sandfall Interactive. The event will also unveil a mystery fourth game, stirring speculation among Xbox fans about potential titles like Fable, The Outer Worlds 2, or Gears of War: E-Day.

Industry insider Jez Corden, in a recent Windows Central feature, offered a tantalizing hint about the mystery game. According to Corden, it will be a "new entry in a legendary Japanese IP which has decades of history," ruling out the possibility of it being from Xbox's first-party studios.

Xbox Developer Direct Mystery Game Could Be a New Entry in a Legendary Japanese Franchise

Given Square Enix's presence at last year's event with Visions of Mana, fans might anticipate another appearance, perhaps with a new Final Fantasy title. However, with Square Enix's ongoing partnership with PlayStation for Final Fantasy, and no immediate plans for another mainline FF or FF7 remake, this seems unlikely.

Other speculated franchises include Capcom's Resident Evil and Sega's Persona. Although Resident Evil games are typically unveiled at PlayStation events, Resident Evil 9 has been rumored to be in development for some time, making it a plausible candidate for a reveal. On the other hand, Xbox's collaboration with Sega for Metaphor: ReFantazio's marketing, coupled with rumors of Persona 6's 2025 release, suggests a potential showcase at the Developer Direct. Additionally, a new Ninja Gaiden game from Team Ninja could be on the cards, given the franchise's historical ties to Xbox during the original Xbox era.

While these guesses are exciting, they remain speculative. Fans should tune into Xbox's Developer Direct on Thursday, January 23, to get official details on Compulsion Games' South of Midnight, Doom: The Dark Ages, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and to discover the identity of the mysterious fourth game.
