Larian Studios, creators of the 2023 Game of the Year, Baldur's Gate 3, have revealed details about a shelved project: a follow-up to BG3.
A Playable BG3 Sequel and DLC Were Abandoned
Larian CEO Swen Vincke shared in a PC Gamer interview that a potential Baldur's Gate 4 was in a playable state. While acknowledging its potential appeal to fans, Vincke explained the decision to abandon it. The team, after extensive work on D&D titles, felt the need to pursue fresh, original ideas rather than committing to another potentially years-long project within the same IP. The prospect of extensive reworking and a prolonged development cycle ultimately led to the decision. A planned BG3 DLC was also abandoned for the same reasons.
High Morale and New Projects
The decision to move on has resulted in high morale within Larian Studios, according to Vincke. The team feels liberated to pursue new projects, which Vincke promises will be their most ambitious yet. Following the Game Awards 2023, the studio shifted focus to these undisclosed projects. A final major patch for Baldur's Gate 3 is planned for Fall 2024, including mod support, cross-play, and new endings.
Potential Return to the Divinity Series
With Larian stepping away from the Baldur's Gate franchise for now, speculation points toward a return to their Divinity series. While a Divinity: Original Sin 3 has been previously hinted at, Vincke clarified that their next Divinity project will be unexpected.
In short, Larian Studios is prioritizing new, unannounced projects after the success of Baldur's Gate 3, leaving behind a playable, but ultimately shelved, sequel and DLC.
