Chris Evans Denies Return to Marvel Cinematic Universe Despite Rumors
Despite recent reports, Chris Evans, the star of the Captain America films, has definitively stated that he will not be reprising his role in Avengers: Doomsday or any other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) project. Evans directly refuted a Deadline report claiming his return alongside Robert Downey Jr., calling it "not true" in an interview with Esquire.
This denial contradicts information shared by Anthony Mackie, the current Captain America. Mackie, who spoke to Esquire, had previously been told by his manager that Evans would be returning. However, after speaking to Evans himself, Mackie learned that the actor is "happily retired" from the MCU.
Evans reinforced this sentiment to Esquire, stating that rumors of his return surface periodically since Avengers: Endgame, and he has ceased responding to them. He reiterated his contentment with his retirement from the franchise.
While Evans is technically not completely absent from the MCU, his appearance as Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine was a cameo role, significantly different from his central Captain America character.
The future of the MCU remains somewhat uncertain following the removal of Jonathan Majors from the franchise due to assault and harassment charges. Majors, who was set to be the next Thanos-level villain, Kang the Conqueror, has been replaced.
Marvel Studios has announced Doctor Doom as the new antagonist, played by Robert Downey Jr., leading to speculation about the return of other original Avengers. However, besides Downey Jr.'s casting, no other returns have been officially confirmed.
Benedict Cumberbatch, who portrays Doctor Strange, confirmed his character's absence from Avengers: Doomsday but hinted at a "central role" in its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars. The Russo Brothers are directing Avengers: Doomsday, which is expected to continue the multiverse storyline, with Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter also rumored to appear.
