DC Comics has announced Superman Unlimited, a new monthly series launching in May 2025, marking the return of Marvel Comics' acclaimed writer, Dan Slott, to DC. Slott, renowned for his work on Marvel titles such as The Amazing Spider-Man, She-Hulk, and Fantastic Four, will be crafting this new Superman saga. While he previously contributed to DC books like Arkham Asylum: Living Hell and Batman Adventures, Slott has been primarily a Marvel writer for the past two decades. This new series changes that.
Superman Unlimited pairs Slott with artist Rafael Albuquerque (known for American Vampire) and colorist Marcelo Maiolo. Slott expressed his excitement, stating, “He’s the first and the greatest superhero of all-time, and I’ve been waiting my whole life to tell stories about him… Rafael Albuquerque and I are going to take him—and you—to places you’ll want to escape to every month. Millions of surprising ideas for Superman, Lois, the supporting cast, classic rogues, and all-new friends and foes too. If you’ve never read a Superman book, a DC book, or any comic book before—or if you’ve been a Superman fan your entire life—you couldn’t ask for a better place to take the leap and go all in than Superman Unlimited #1.”
The series introduces a perilous new reality for Superman. A Kryptonite asteroid shower blankets the planet, empowering enemies like Intergang with Kryptonite-enhanced weaponry. This forces Superman to develop innovative technology and combat strategies. Simultaneously, Clark Kent faces a transformed Daily Planet, now a global multimedia conglomerate following its merger with Morgan Edge's Galaxy Communications.
DC group editor Paul Kaminski compared Superman Unlimited to Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness’s Superman/Batman from the early 2000s, highlighting its grand-scale adventures. He emphasized the impact of the massive Kryptonite deposit: “Imagine a world where Superman is stopping a bank robbery, but every weapon is packed with Kryptonite ammunition and every petty criminal carries a Kryptonite shiv. This is a world of unlimited danger on a level that Superman, and DC’s Superman family of characters, has never faced before.” Kaminski further contrasted it with the recently launched Justice League Unlimited, stating that while that series focuses on unlimited heroes, Superman Unlimited will showcase unlimited, Kryptonite-empowered villains.
Slott and Albuquerque's work begins with a 10-page prelude in DC All In 2025 FCBD Special Edition #1, releasing May 3, 2025. Superman Unlimited #1 follows on May 21, preceding the July 11 release of James Gunn's Superman film.
