George R.R. Martin has responded to mounting fan frustration regarding the delayed release of Winds of Winter, the highly anticipated sixth installment in his A Song of Ice and Fire series, telling disappointed readers: "You've given up on me."
Last week, Martin joined an animated Hercules adaptation project as producer - his latest non-Winds of Winter endeavor. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film titled A Dozen Tough Jobs will reinterpret Hercules' 12 labors through the perspective of a 1920s Mississippi farmer.
In a heartfelt blog post, the author addressed fan reactions to his new project:
"I know many of you will be upset by this news, as you are with any announcement not related to Westeros or Winds of Winter. Some of you have lost faith in me entirely - convinced I'll never finish Winds, or that if I do, it won't meet expectations. You think I should pass the torch to another writer, that I've lost interest in the series, that I'm too old and distracted. But nothing could be further from the truth. I love Westeros and its characters deeply - the Starks, Lannisters, Targaryens, Tyrion, Dany, the dragons and direwolves. More than you can possibly imagine.
A Dozen Tough Jobs captivated me decades ago when I first read it. It saddens me that Robert E. Howard didn't live to see this adaptation. I hope we do justice to his vision."
The sixth book in Martin's epic fantasy series still lacks a release date, with fans waiting nearly fourteen years since A Dance with Dragons published in 2011. While Martin maintains plans to complete the saga with A Dream of Spring, his various other commitments - including House of the Dragon and video game projects like Elden Ring - have slowed progress.
In recent months, Martin has repeatedly denied rumors about the book's imminent release. "Television projects consumed much of last year," he admitted in September 2024. A more recent April 2025 blog post stated definitively: "The book is not coming soon."
When do you think Winds of Winter will finally release?
