Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link, the GPS-based action-RPG mobile game, has been discontinued—though Square Enix reassured fans they remain "fully committed" to Kingdom Hearts 4's development.
The cancelled project would have transported players to Scala ad Caelum with a completely original narrative battling Heartless on mobile platforms, originally targeting a 2024 launch.
An official statement on the game's X/Twitter account expressed "deepest apologies to eagerly awaiting fans," explaining the cancellation resulted from difficulties ensuring "a service that would satisfy players long-term." No specific technical hurdles were disclosed.
"We sincerely regret disappointing those anticipating this release," the company stated. "Despite extensive development efforts to create an enjoyable experience, we concluded we couldn't guarantee sustainable player satisfaction, leading to this difficult decision."
The message continued: "We're profoundly grateful to all beta test participants for their invaluable support. This cancellation weighs heavily on our team."
In a crucial closing note, Square Enix affirmed the "Kingdom Hearts franchise will evolve," adding: "Our dedicated team is progressing Kingdom Hearts 4's development—we appreciate your continued support as we prepare future announcements."
This marks the franchise's first substantial update since January's mysterious Kingdom Hearts 4 teaser. Following its spectacular 2022 reveal trailer, Square Enix has maintained radio silence—a signature approach that continues fueling fan anticipation.
Series creator Tetsuya Nomura has suggested Kingdom Hearts 4 may, after two decades and numerous installments, begin steering the saga toward its ultimate resolution.
