Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have revealed the premiere date for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, with the Sméagol-centric story hitting theaters on December 17, 2027.
The newly announced release pushes the film over two years beyond the current date. While this marks at least a year's delay from the initially projected 2026 timeline, devoted fantasy enthusiasts are undoubtedly already planning their 2027 holiday season around this cinematic event.
Helming The Hunt for Gollum is Andy Serkis, acclaimed director of Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle. Best known for his groundbreaking motion-capture performances as Caesar in the Planet of the Apes trilogy and Gollum across both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, Serkis will now bring his unique perspective to the project both as director and performer.
While Serkis possesses unparalleled insight into Gollum's character, he'll collaborate with esteemed Middle-earth veterans behind the scenes. The producing team includes Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Zane Weiner, with Walsh, Boyens, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou handling screenplay duties.
Regarding plot specifics, Jackson previously hinted at exploring untold backstories of fan-favorite characters. The director explained they aim to revisit narrative threads that couldn't be fully developed in prior films.
"We're particularly excited to examine Gollum's earlier history and aspects of his journey we couldn't properly explore before," Jackson noted earlier. "While we can't confirm which characters might intersect with his path, we remain committed to honoring J.R.R. Tolkien's original vision."

As Warner Bros. expands its Middle-earth cinematic universe, The Hunt for Gollum - along with potential subsequent films - will probably include familiar faces. Among anticipated returns is Gandalf, with Boyens suggesting to Empire last October that the beloved wizard could appear in two upcoming live-action projects. If negotiations succeed, iconic actor Ian McKellen might reprise his legendary role.
With The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum now slated for December 2027, fans have ample time to prepare. Until then, viewers can stay updated on Amazon Prime Video's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, which received confirmation for Season 3 earlier this year.
