Mario Kart World introduces a completely original map that compiles iconic Mario universe locations. Series Producer Kosuke Yabuki confirmed this represents a special racing-focused version rather than the official Mushroom Kingdom canon.
In a June 3 interview with The Verge, Yabuki explained how the team designed the interconnected world specifically for racing mechanics. "As players explore, they'll recognize familiar elements like question blocks and warp pipes," he noted. "However, every geographical feature - from mountain heights to desert lengths - was deliberately crafted for Mario Kart World's racing experience."

Yabuki emphasized that traditional world-building logic took a backseat to race track functionality. He described how modifying any element created a domino effect requiring comprehensive adjustments, especially when expanding from 12 to 24 racers. This fundamental redesign forced the team to reconsider multiple gameplay aspects simultaneously.

Nintendo has released patch notes for Mario Kart World's version 1.1.0 update ahead of launch. The update enables CameraPlay functionality for Switch 2 (requiring the optional camera accessory), activates online/LAN multiplayer, and removes course selection time limits in Wireless/LAN play.
The update also expands the starting character roster and enables ghost data sharing for Time Trials. As excitement builds for this reimagined Mario Kart experience, fans can prepare to explore the innovative Mushroom Kingdom racing landscape when Mario Kart World launches June 5, 2025 exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2.
