Is A Mobile Version Of FFXIV In Development? Break Down Of The Rumors

Rumors are swirling online about a potential mobile version of the popular MMORPG, FFXIV. A gaming industry leaker, Kurakasis, alleges that Tencent Games and Square Enix are collaborating on bringing the expansive game to mobile devices.

A Track Record

This isn't Square Enix's first foray into mobile Final Fantasy titles. Previous attempts, however, have yielded mixed results. While Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis received a lukewarm reception, Dissidia Final Fantasy: Opera Omnia ultimately shut down. Adapting a full-fledged MMORPG like FFXIV to mobile presents a significant challenge.

Important Note: This remains unconfirmed. Square Enix hasn't officially commented. However, past collaborations between Square Enix and Tencent lend some credence to the rumor. Discussions regarding joint projects were reported in 2018 and 2021, involving then-president Yosuke Matsuda.

Kurakasis' leak provides no timeframe, leaving the project's status uncertain. A formal announcement is likely some time away.

The success of this endeavor hinges on Square Enix's ability to translate FFXIV's complex mechanics to a mobile platform without compromising the depth players appreciate. A simplified, inferior version could disappoint fans.
