Announced at PlayStation's September 2024 State of Play, Palworld finally arrives on PlayStation consoles, following its Xbox and PC releases. However, the PS5 launch has been delayed indefinitely in Japan due to legal issues with Nintendo.
Palworld launched on PS5 as announced during PlayStation's September 2024 State of Play. Sony's trailer even showcased a Palworld character sporting gear inspired by Aloy from Horizon Forbidden West.
Despite the global PS5 launch, Japanese players are currently unable to access the game. This delay is attributed to ongoing legal action between Nintendo/Pokémon and Palworld developer Pocketpair.
Following Sony's announcement, Palworld's Japanese Twitter (X) account provided an update: "As announced at the PlayStation State of Play, the PS5 version of 'Palworld' launched today in 68 countries and regions worldwide." The statement continued with an apology to Japanese fans, confirming that a release date for Japan is yet to be determined. They pledged to bring the game to all PS5 users as soon as possible.
While Pocketpair hasn't explicitly stated the reason for the delay, it's widely believed to be a direct consequence of the legal battle in Japan. Last week, Nintendo filed a lawsuit in Tokyo District Court seeking an injunction and damages against Palworld, alleging patent infringement. A granted injunction could force Pocketpair to cease Palworld operations entirely, potentially leading to the game's removal from all platforms.
