Sony has announced that the PlayStation 5 has reached a new sales milestone, with 80.3 million units shipped globally according to its latest financial report.
This figure, accurate as of June 30, 2025, reflects an increase of 2.5 million consoles shipped in the previous three months—a slight improvement compared to the same period last year.
These results are positive for Sony, with PlayStation Network subscribers growing by 7 million year-over-year, reaching a total of 123 million users.
Combined software sales for PS5 and PS4 reached 65.9 million units in the last quarter—an annual increase of 12.3 million. Among these, 6.9 million copies were first-party Sony titles, marking a rise of 900,000 from the previous year.
After five years on the market, the PS5 is quickly catching up to lifetime sales of the Xbox 360 (approximately 84 million) and the PS3 (87 million), though it still has some distance to cover to match the industry’s top-selling systems.
Sony’s PS2 continues to hold the record as the best-selling console ever, with 160 million units sold. The original Nintendo Switch follows closely at 153 million, trailed by the PS4 at 117 million and the original PlayStation at 102 million.
How many more units can Sony sell in this generation? The answer largely depends on how long the current generation lasts, with one report indicating a potential PS6 launch in 2027.
