Director Shawn Levy, known for Deadpool & Wolverine, may soon be venturing to a galaxy far, far away—with Ryan Gosling potentially joining the journey.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Levy's Star Wars film is now in talks with Ryan Gosling to star. Levy has been developing the project since 2022, with scripting underway since last year. He is collaborating once again with Jonathan Tropper, the writer behind This Is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project, both directed by Levy.
As expected, key details of Levy’s Star Wars movie remain under wraps. There’s no confirmation on Gosling’s role or the specific era in the Star Wars timeline. What is known is that the story is separate from the Skywalker Saga.
The Hollywood Reporter also indicates it’s planned as a standalone film, meaning it likely won’t launch a trilogy.

Involvement from Ryan Gosling has accelerated the project. Levy was initially scheduled to direct a boy band movie starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. However, THR notes that if Gosling officially signs on, the Star Wars film will move up in the schedule and become Levy’s next project, targeting a fall start for production.
Star Wars is currently in a transitional phase. Following the cancellation of The Acolyte, Disney Plus released its latest Star Wars series, Skeleton Crew, which just concluded. On the film front, Dave Filoni’s The Mandalorian and Grogu wrapped production in December and is scheduled for release on May 22, 2026. Additionally, a new trilogy focusing on Daisy Ridley’s Rey from the sequel films is in the works.
No release date has been set yet for Levy’s Star Wars movie, should it advance this year. For more on what's coming to the Star Wars universe, see our 2025 Star Wars preview.
