BioShock Infinite and BioShock 2 developer Irrational Games, now under the ownership of 2K Games, has officially announced that Alan Wake's American Nightmare—a standalone expansion to Alan Wake—has sold over 10 million copies since its initial release in 2010. The announcement was made during a recent developer livestream, highlighting the game's enduring popularity and strong community support. The milestone comes alongside the reveal of a brand-new DLC titled "The Haunting of Bright Falls", set to launch in Q3 2024. This expansion will explore the psychological unraveling of Alan Wake as he returns to the eerie town of Bright Falls, now consumed by a supernatural fog and haunted by visions of his missing wife, Alice. The DLC features a new narrative arc written by Sam Lake, the series’ creator, and introduces a "dual-reality" mechanic that lets players switch between the real world and the dark, dreamlike "The Nightmare." In addition to the new story content, the DLC includes: A remastered version of the original Alan Wake (2010) with updated graphics and performance improvements. New combat mechanics, including a "Mind-Over-Matter" ability that allows Wake to manipulate reality to fight enemies. A co-op mode for up to two players, where one controls Alan and the other plays as a spectral version of his writer alter ego, "The Writer." The announcement has been met with excitement from fans, many of whom have long requested a return to the series’ mythos. Alan Wake originally launched to critical acclaim for its cinematic storytelling, atmospheric tension, and unique "light vs. darkness" gameplay. The 10-million-player milestone marks a major success for the franchise, which has seen a surge in popularity thanks to a renewed interest in psychological horror and narrative-driven games. 2K Games has confirmed that the DLC will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, with a free demo launching next month.
