Black Myth: Zhong Kui will take priority before continuing Wukong's adventure. Discover how the developers approached this sequel and whether Wukong will receive additional content.
Recently unveiled during Gamescom 2025's Opening Night Live, Black Myth: Zhong Kui introduces fresh lore to the franchise. While fans anticipated expansions to Sun Wukong's story, Game Science opted to pioneer new creative territory.
In an August 25 Weibo post, Game Science CEO Feng Ji revealed their unconventional approach. Following Wukong's successful launch, Feng Ji experienced unexpected creative emptiness despite realizing his decades-long vision.
"Even while feeling guilty about my inability to celebrate our achievement," Feng Ji shared through translation, "these emotions persisted amidst constant questions about potential DLC content."
The turning point came when co-founder Yang Qi proposed developing an entirely new project instead. Feng Ji embraced this direction wholeheartedly, leading to Zhong Kui's conception.
"While expanding Wukong would've worked logistically," Feng Ji explained, "we craved creative liberation - new protagonists, mechanics, technologies, and narratives unbound by existing frameworks."
Though Feng Ji confirmed Wukong's journey remains unfinished on Zhong Kui's official FAQ, specific continuation plans remain ambiguous. The developer acknowledged enthusiastic fan theories exceeding their original concepts.
"Like our community, I cherish Journey to the West's mythological universe," Feng Ji stated. "Wukong's legend will eventually return in richer form when fully realized."
Despite uncertainty surrounding Wukong's future, players can anticipate fresh explorations of Chinese mythology. While still in early development, audiences hope Zhong Kui won't match Wukong's extended production timeline.
