Hideo Kojima's much-anticipated project, Physint, described as a spiritual successor to his renowned Metal Gear series, is still a distant dream, with a projected release timeline of "another five or six years" away. This update comes directly from Kojima, who shared his thoughts with Le Film Francais, emphasizing his focus on completing his first "action espionage" game since his notable departure from Konami in 2015.
Kojima has been inundated with offers since leaving Konami, but he remains committed to his independent studio's current projects, including Death Stranding 2 and Physint. "I've had so many offers since I left Konami, with serious conditions to develop games in my independent studio," Kojima explained, as translated by ResetEra member Red Kong XIX. "Besides Death Stranding 2, there's also Physint in development. That will take me another five or six years."
The visionary director also expressed his long-held desire to direct a movie, a dream he hopes to fulfill after completing Physint. "But maybe after that, I could finally decide to take on a film," he noted. "I grew up with cinema. Directing would be, in a way, a tribute to it. Also, I'm getting older, and I'd prefer to do it while I'm still young!"
PlayStation Studios boss Herman Hulst first announced Physint in January 2024, but details have been scarce since. Initially, Kojima hinted that Physint might blur the lines between game and movie, but he later clarified on X/Twitter that while the game's "look, story, theme, cast, acting, fashion, sound, etc… are all at the next level of ‘Digital Entertainment,’" it would not be a traditional film.Kojima Productions is juggling multiple projects, including Death Stranding 2 and OD, a new IP developed in collaboration with Xbox Game Studios, featuring actress Hunter Schafer and filmmaker Jordan Peele. Additionally, Kojima is involved in A24's film adaptation of the original Death Stranding.
Fans won't have to wait long for Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, set to launch on June 26. The game's star, Norman Reedus, recently shared with IGN that he would "of course" reprise his role in the upcoming film adaptation.
Kojima's creative process remains as intriguing as ever. Last week, he revealed that he had left his staff a USB stick filled with game ideas to explore after his passing. This follows his recent disclosure of discarded concepts, including a unique ‘Forgetting Game’ where the protagonist loses memories and abilities if the player takes too long a break.
