Smash Together, an unofficial dating app designed to connect Super Smash Bros. enthusiasts, reportedly received a cease-and-desist letter just before its scheduled open beta launch.
The app was set to enter open beta on May 15 after months of development when, on May 13, its official account shared a melancholy Yoshi meme with the caption: "We got cease and desisted."

While the developers haven't identified the sender, most speculate it came from Nintendo given the app's direct association with the Smash Bros. franchise.
Promoted as "the premium dating site for Super Smash Bros. fans," SmashTogether offered specialized matchmaking to find your "ultimate Doubles partner (both in and out of the game)." The app featured profile sections for listing your preferred "main" character, tourney victories, and Smash-themed dating prompts like "Seeking someone who can escape pools at a major."
Beyond potential intellectual property concerns, the concept of a dating platform tied to Smash Bros. may itself have prompted the legal action.
The SmashTogether team hasn't announced whether they'll pursue an alternative version without Smash Bros. branding. In the meantime, we'll resist the obvious temptation for crude wordplay you may have expected here.
