Monster Hunter Wilds Team Explores Adding a New Weapon Type

15th Weapon Type Still Under Consideration

After more than a decade with the same weapon roster, the Monster Hunter series could benefit from a fresh addition. In a February 16, 2025, interview with PCGamesN, Monster Hunter Wilds Director Yuya Tokuda discussed the possibility of introducing a new weapon type to the franchise.

Monster Hunter Wilds offers players 14 weapon types, unchanged since the Insect Glaive debuted in Monster Hunter 4. Tokuda shared that the team considered a new weapon during the development of MH World and Wilds. "It’s not ruled out for any specific reason; we just haven’t committed to it for recent titles," he explained.

Tokuda highlighted the challenge of designing a weapon that stands out without overlapping existing ones. He noted, "For each game, we refine all weapon types, introducing new concepts and enhancing their interplay to keep them fresh. We also add depth with new combos and moves. The time and resources needed for this have consistently been prioritized over adding a new weapon."

Capcom continues to evolve its games, tweaking weapons to align with the vision for MH Wilds through features like Focus Mode and Power Clash. Responding to feedback from the MH Wilds beta, Tokuda emphasized, "We aim to avoid changes so drastic that a weapon loses its core identity."

He elaborated on their approach to weapon balancing, stating, "For each title, we have a vision for how weapons like the Insect Glaive or Great Sword should feel." Tokuda added, "This is just a concept—you design and test it, but it’s only when players use it that you see if the experience matches the intent."

Regarding weapon adjustments for MH Wilds, Tokuda noted, "Balancing was tough since Iceborne, the predecessor, added advanced moves and abilities for master rank difficulty, assuming players had mastered the basics." He continued, "In Wilds, we took care to ensure changes fit the game’s intended play feel, not just carry over what players liked in the last title."

To celebrate the upcoming release of MH Wilds, Monster Hunter Now will launch phase 2 of its collaboration event on February 28, 2025. The event introduces Chatacabra to MH Now, along with 12 Hope weapons from MH Wilds. Players can also unlock two new layered armors: Hope armor style and a Seikret mount-themed armor.

MH Now players can earn vouchers for MH Wilds items, including Mega Potion, Dust of Life, Energy Drink, Well-done Steak, and Dash Juice, by completing limited-time quests. These vouchers are redeemable on any platform for MH Wilds.

During a Season 5 press briefing on February 18, 2025, Niantic Senior Producer Sakae Osumi hinted at future collaborations. "This marks the start of our partnership with Monster Hunter Wilds, and we plan to bring more monsters from Wilds in future events," he said, noting close coordination with Capcom.

Monster Hunter Wilds launches on February 28, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Stay informed with the latest updates on Monster Hunter Wilds in our article below!
