Avowed's successful launch has sparked exciting possibilities for the franchise's future, with hints of expansions or sequels from the game's director. Read on to discover more about the potential for continued adventures in this captivating world.
Following Avowed's strong sales performance, which has reportedly pleased both Microsoft and Obsidian, Game Director Carrie Patel hinted at future plans in a February 22, 2025 Bloomberg interview. While Obsidian hasn't officially announced any sequels or expansions, Patel expressed a keen interest in continuing the Avowed story. She stated, "Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it."
Avowed's journey to release wasn't without its hurdles. Patel revealed a complex development process, marked by significant changes and challenges. The project, initiated in 2018 amidst Obsidian's consideration of a sale, faced the inherent difficulties of independence. Subsequently acquired by Microsoft in 2020, the game underwent a leadership change and a reboot in January 2021. Patel described the challenges of managing a large team: "Normally if you’re stepping back and reevaluating your creative direction…you would do that with a very small team," she noted, highlighting the complexities of overseeing over 80 individuals. Under her direction, the team refocused, emphasizing the Pillars of Eternity lore and transitioning from a fully open world to open zones, allowing for greater refinement of individual areas. Patel concluded, "There’s this interesting thing I’ve seen on every project I’ve worked on…things are messy, messy, messy, then they start coming together."
With the renewed success of the Pillars of Eternity franchise through Avowed, Obsidian has expressed interest in developing a Pillars of Eternity Tactics game. In a February 23, 2025 Twitch livestream, Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Director Josh Sawyer revealed this interest, stating, "Pillars: Tactics is a thing that a lot of people would like…there are a lot of people who like tactics games." However, he also acknowledged the significant challenges in determining the game's scope, including team size, visual quality, and overall scale. While previous reports indicated developer interest in a tactics title, Avowed's success may finally bring this project to fruition. Sawyer also reiterated his desire to create Pillars of Eternity 3, envisioning a budget comparable to Baldur's Gate 3's $100 million, a significant increase from the budget of Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire.
