Development Started After X-Men 2: Wolverine’s Revenge

Kevin Edwards, a former developer at Genepool Software, unveiled on Twitter (X) never-before-seen images from a canceled Iron Man game that was slated for a 2003 release. The game, titled "The Invincible Iron Man," was meant to pay homage to the character’s iconic comic book moniker. Edwards began working on this project right after the successful launch of Genepool Software's X-Men 2: Wolverine’s Revenge.

Edwards shared the game’s title card, featuring Genepool Software’s logo, along with several screenshots of gameplay. He also posted gameplay footage from the original Xbox console, showcasing the game’s startup screen and a snippet of the tutorial set in a rocky desert environment.

Despite the enthusiasm from Edwards and the supportive reactions from fans, "The Invincible Iron Man" was unfortunately canceled by Activision only months into its development. The closure of Genepool Software followed shortly after, leaving Edwards and his team jobless.

Activision did not publicly disclose the reasons for the game’s cancellation. However, Edwards speculated on several possible reasons in response to inquiries from fans. He mentioned that the delay of an Iron Man film could have been a factor, or perhaps Activision felt the game did not meet their quality standards and chose not to continue funding it. Additionally, Edwards suggested that another developer might have been lined up to take over the project.

Commenters also noted the unique design of Tony Stark’s character in the game, which differed significantly from the modern-day Iron Man popularized by Robert Downey Jr. in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The suit design in the game more closely resembled the "Ultimate Marvel" comic book series from the early 2000s. Edwards admitted he was unsure about the reasoning behind the chosen design, stating it was a decision made by the game's designer.

While Edwards promised to share more gameplay footage, as of now, those additional insights have yet to be released.
