Warner Bros. has officially confirmed the fears of many *Mortal Kombat 1* fans—the Definitive Edition’s release also marks the end of the road for new DLC characters and story expansions. Despite the franchise reaching a major milestone with over 100 million units sold globally, *Mortal Kombat 1* has seen a weaker performance compared to its predecessors. While it has managed to reach 5 million sales, it falls short of the impressive numbers achieved by *Mortal Kombat 11*, which surpassed 15 million copies sold by 2022.
On social media, Warner Bros. addressed the disappointment players may feel, stating that while future updates will include balance adjustments and bug fixes, no additional post-launch content in the form of new characters or story chapters will be released. The final major content drop came in March 2025 with the addition of the T-1000 guest character—nearly one-and-a-half years after the game’s initial launch.
Here's the full statement from the studio:
We are hearing players’ requests for continued game support of Mortal Kombat 1, and, while we will continue to support Mortal Kombat 1 through balance adjustments and fixes, there will not be additional DLC characters or story chapters released from this point on.
We understand this will be disappointing for fans, but our team at NetherRealm needs to shift focus to the next project in order to make it as great as we possibly can.
This announcement arrives just one year and eight months after *Mortal Kombat 1* launched—a notably shorter support window than what was offered for *Mortal Kombat 11*, which received DLC until two years and three months post-release. Fans have pointed out earlier promises made by NetherRealm co-founder Ed Boon, who had previously assured the community of long-term support for the title. Notably, a September 2024 tweet from Boon stated: “NetherRealm is still fully committed to supporting Mortal Kombat 1 for a long time to come.”
The recent surprise collaboration with Floyd, the pink ninja developer Ed Boon had teased for years, gave *Mortal Kombat 1* a brief revival in January. It sparked excitement across the player community and offered a fun interactive event that reinvigorated interest in the game. However, for many longtime fans, the overall lifecycle of *Mortal Kombat 1* has been underwhelming.
Despite this, Warner Bros. Discovery remains optimistic about the franchise’s future. In November, CEO David Zaslav revealed plans to focus development efforts on only four key titles—one of them being *Mortal Kombat*. Meanwhile, the cinematic universe expands with the upcoming release of *Mortal Kombat 2*, set to hit theaters later this year.
