Nintendo has launched its controversial $10 Switch 2 Welcome Tour collection alongside the new console - a package that many gamers argue should have been free. This compilation of tech demos and mini-games serves as a hardware showcase, but comes with some expensive requirements for completionists.
To fully experience everything in Welcome Tour, players need more than just the base $10 purchase. Three specific mini-games require additional hardware: a camera ($54.99), either a Charging Grip ($39.99) or Pro Controller ($84.99) for the new GL/GR buttons, and a 4K TV if you don't already own one.
The collection highlights features that aren't even included with the standard Joy-Cons, creating what feels like an extended advertisement for Nintendo's accessory ecosystem.
Budget-conscious gamers might find slight savings by using third-party USB-C cameras instead of Nintendo's official $54.99 model. However, the controller situation has no workarounds - Switch 1 Pro Controllers lack the necessary GL/GR buttons, forcing players to purchase new hardware.
The decision to charge for Welcome Tour has drawn comparisons to Nintendo's Wii Sports strategy. Former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé famously pushed to bundle Wii Sports with consoles in Western markets, creating one of gaming's most successful titles.
"This feels like the exact opposite of the Wii Sports approach," commented one frustrated fan. "Instead of showing off the console's potential with an included pack-in game, they're charging for what's essentially a tech demo."
The controversy adds another layer to the Switch 2's launch conversation, following reports of retailers damaging consoles by stapling through thin packaging. Whether these early stumbles will impact sales remains to be seen, but they've certainly given gamers plenty to discuss.
