Sony's copyright claims against Bloodborne fan projects are escalating. Following a DMCA takedown of the popular Bloodborne 60fps mod last week, a YouTube video showcasing the impressive Bloodborne PSX demake has now received a copyright claim from MarkScan Enforcement, a company reportedly hired by Sony.
Lance McDonald, creator of the 60fps mod, confirmed MarkScan's involvement, noting they also issued the DMCA for his mod. He expressed bewilderment at Sony's actions, questioning the rationale behind targeting these fan projects.
The situation highlights the ongoing frustration surrounding Bloodborne's lack of official next-gen support. While fans clamor for a 60fps patch, remaster, or even a sequel, Sony remains silent. The recent breakthrough in PS4 emulation, enabling near-remaster quality gameplay at 60fps on PC, may have spurred Sony's aggressive response. Sony has yet to comment on the situation.
McDonald speculates that Sony's actions might be a preemptive measure to clear the way for an official 60fps remake, suggesting they are attempting to secure trademarks related to "Bloodborne 60fps" and "Bloodborne remake."
Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida offered his theory: Miyazaki, the creator of Bloodborne, holds a strong attachment to the game and doesn't want anyone else to tamper with it, a sentiment respected by the PlayStation team.
Despite Miyazaki's past acknowledgment that Bloodborne would benefit from a modern hardware release, the game remains largely untouched, nearly a decade after its initial release. The future of Bloodborne remains uncertain, leaving fans to speculate on the possibility of an official remake or other updates.
