Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has reached a remarkable sales milestone, selling 2 million copies within just 12 days of release. This impressive figure follows the 1 million copies sold in the first three days after launch.
It’s important to note that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was a day-one release on Game Pass, alongside Bethesda’s Oblivion Remastered. This makes the sales achievement even more significant for French developer Sandfall Interactive and publisher Kepler Interactive.
“We’ve been amazed to see so many of you begin your journey,” reads a social media announcement. “We’ve shared every step, every emotion, and every discovery with you.
“To those who are just starting: welcome.
“Tomorrow awaits.”
When Bethesda unexpectedly released The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered alongside the launch of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, many assumed only one title would come out on top. Yet, it became clear that both games had ample opportunity to thrive.
In fact, according to Kepler, Oblivion’s release did not negatively impact Clair Obscur—instead, it boosted interest in the RPG genre, which ultimately benefited both games.
Matt Handrahan, Kepler Interactive’s senior portfolio manager, shared with The Game Business last week: “We always recognized that Expedition 33 had a distinct identity. During my time in the press, I observed that Western-style RPGs and Japanese-style RPGs often appealed to different audiences. I knew many players who enjoyed Elder Scrolls games but weren’t necessarily drawn to Final Fantasy, and vice versa.
“By the time we launched, we had built our own momentum and felt confident we could hold our own. Factors such as our pricing strategy and inclusion in Game Pass also played a role—we knew the game would attract significant interest. We were confident in its potential, and the outcome exceeded our expectations. In many ways, launching near Oblivion didn’t hurt us at all; it actually helped spotlight high-quality RPGs that week, sparking broader conversation about the genre.”
