In an interview featured in PC Gamer Magazine Issue 405 (reported by Games Radar on February 10, 2025), director Junya Ishizaki revealed Nightreign's innovative map design. Volcanoes, forests, and swamps will dynamically appear, dramatically altering each playthrough.

This Soulslike adventure will challenge you with familiar hazards like poison swamps, forcing strategic adaptations to survive. Ishizaki explained the map's "large-scale changes to terrain...in the form of procedurally appearing volcanoes, swamps, or forests," creating a truly unpredictable world.

The design philosophy centers on making "the map itself...a giant dungeon," offering diverse exploration and strategic choices with each playthrough. Forests, for example, provide cover for both players and enemies, adding another layer of tactical depth.

"Once you've made that choice [of strategy],...this might change how you approach the map. We wanted to offer players that agency, to decide 'I need to go after a poison weapon this time to face this boss.'"

Expect familiar challenging terrains like the Swamp of Aeonia and Lake of Rot to return, slowing players and inflicting the Rot debuff. These procedurally generated areas may also introduce unique enemies, such as Giant Lobsters, Crabs, Runebears, Magma Wyrms, and other formidable foes from previous Souls games.
