Avowed's game director offers a detailed preview of the game's intricate mechanics and multiple endings ahead of its 2025 release.
Obsidian Entertainment's Avowed promises players a rich, multifaceted experience where every decision shapes their journey. Game director Carrie Patel highlights the game's emphasis on player agency, stating that choices, both large and small, contribute to a cohesive and personalized narrative.
"It's about providing players with continuous opportunities to express and explore their character's alignment," Patel explains. She emphasizes the importance of mindful gameplay, prompting players to consider their motivations and engagement throughout the experience. "When am I excited? When am I curious? When is my attention starting to wane?" These are the questions Avowed encourages players to ask themselves.
Patel further explains that the outcomes in Avowed are directly influenced by player exploration within the expansive world of Eora, particularly in the politically charged region of The Living Lands. "The interwoven narratives of these worlds are a source of great enjoyment for me," she adds.
Players assume the role of an Aedyran Empire envoy investigating a spiritual plague while simultaneously pursuing their own political ambitions. "Meaningful roleplay stems from providing players with rich content to delve into," Patel notes. "It's about defining who you want to be in this world and how the game's scenarios allow you to express that identity."
Beyond the intricate RPG systems, Avowed features strategic combat incorporating magic, swords, and firearms. "The diverse abilities and weapon combinations ensure a unique experience with each playthrough," Patel confirms.
In a conversation with IGN, Patel revealed the game boasts a significant number of endings with numerous variations. "We have double-digit ending slides, and they can combine in many different ways," she explains. "True to Obsidian's style, your ending is a direct reflection of your choices throughout the game, shaped by the content you encountered and your actions within it."
