Chess Enters the Esports Arena: A Historic Moment at EWC 2025
The Esports World Cup (EWC) 2025 tournament lineup has a surprising new addition: chess! This ancient game joins the ranks of esports, a testament to its enduring appeal and competitive spirit.
A groundbreaking partnership between Chess.com, Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, and the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF) brings competitive chess to the world's largest gaming and esports festival. This collaboration aims to introduce the classic game to a broader, more modern audience.
EWCF CEO Ralf Reichert hailed chess as "the mother of all strategy games," expressing excitement about its inclusion. He emphasized chess's global reach and vibrant competitive scene as a perfect fit for the EWC's mission.
Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, a retired world champion and current world number one, will serve as an ambassador, aiming to connect chess with a wider audience and inspire future generations of players. He expressed his enthusiasm for this opportunity to elevate the game's profile.
The EWC 2025, taking place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from July 31st to August 3rd, will feature a $1.5 million prize pool. To qualify, players must excel in the 2025 Champions Chess Tour (CCT) held in February and May. The top 12 CCT players, along with four "Last Chance Qualifier" winners, will compete for a $300,000 prize pool and a coveted spot in the EWC's inaugural chess competition.
The CCT will employ a fast-paced 10-minute time control format to enhance the esports viewing experience, deviating from traditional championship time limits. Armageddon tiebreakers will ensure decisive outcomes.
Chess, originating in ancient India over 1500 years ago, has captivated players for centuries. Its digital adaptation, particularly through platforms like Chess.com, broadened its accessibility, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. The game's popularity has also been boosted by media exposure through streaming, influencers, and shows like "The Queen's Gambit."
This official recognition as an esport promises to attract even more players and fans, solidifying chess's place in the modern competitive gaming landscape.
