NIS America Accelerates Western Releases of Trails and Ys Series

Trails and Ys Localizations Promised to Come Faster

Fans of Falcom's acclaimed Trails and Ys RPG franchises can rejoice! NIS America, the publisher bringing these beloved Japanese titles to the West, has announced a significant commitment to faster localization. This follows the recent release of Ys X: Nordics and the upcoming release of Trails Through Daybreak II in early 2025.

Trails and Ys Localizations Promised to Come Faster

Alan Costa, NIS America's Senior Associate Producer, confirmed the accelerated efforts, though specifics on internal changes remain undisclosed. He highlighted Trails Through Daybreak II's significantly shorter localization timeframe compared to previous Trails titles, despite its initial Japanese release in September 2022. This represents substantial progress, given the historical delays plaguing the series' Western releases.

Trails and Ys Localizations Promised to Come Faster

The past challenges were considerable. The sheer volume of text in Trails games, as previously explained by former XSEED Games Localization Manager Jessica Chavez, created a major bottleneck. Even recent titles like Trails from Zero and Trails to Azure experienced twelve-year delays.

While the localization process remains a two-to-three-year undertaking, NIS America emphasizes maintaining quality alongside speed. Costa clarified the publisher's dedication to avoiding rushed localizations at the cost of accuracy. The balance between swift delivery and high-quality translation is an ongoing focus.

Trails and Ys Localizations Promised to Come Faster

The need for careful translation is underscored by the infamous delay of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana due to mistranslation. This serves as a valuable lesson in prioritizing accuracy. However, the positive reception of Trails Through Daybreak suggests NIS America is successfully navigating this delicate balance.

The improved turnaround time for Trails Through Daybreak II signals a promising trend for future releases. This accelerated localization, combined with the game's positive critical and fan response, offers considerable hope for a more timely arrival of future Trails and Ys titles in the West.
