Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 (KCD2) has experienced a phenomenal launch, achieving both significant sales figures and widespread critical acclaim across all platforms. Warhorse Studios proudly announced on Twitter (X) that the game sold over 1 million copies on February 4th, 2025—a remarkable feat that significantly outpaces its predecessor, which took over nine days to reach the same milestone.
According to SteamDB, KCD2 boasted 176,285 concurrent players within six hours of release (at the time of writing), eclipsing KCD1's all-time peak of 96,069 players. Furthermore, KCD2 currently ranks 12th among all PlayStation games in the U.S. as displayed on the PS Store homepage (at the time of writing).
The game also received a prestigious "Mighty" rating from OpenCritic, boasting a score of 89 and a remarkable 97% critic recommendation rate.
Despite the overwhelmingly positive reception from fans and critics, KCD2 hasn't been without its detractors. Creative Director Daniel Vávra addressed some negative reviews on Twitter (X), acknowledging the disparity between the game's generally high ratings and some significantly lower scores from specific outlets.
Certain video game review sites assigned KCD2 considerably lower scores than its average rating, often describing the gameplay as a "slog" or requiring more effort than expected. This resulted in a slight dip in the game's overall OpenCritic score, a point Vávra addressed in several Twitter (X) posts, responding with measured commentary and subtly highlighting what he considered inconsistencies in their "journalistic standards."
Vávra also responded to online criticism targeting KCD2's inclusion of same-sex romance options. He called out several Metacritic user reviews that labeled KCD2 as a "historically inaccurate DEI game" on Twitter (X), encouraging fans to review the game themselves and report any automated, negative comments on review sites.
He reiterated that the LGBTQ+ content is entirely optional and depends entirely on player choices. Given the open-world, medieval setting of KCD2, players have extensive freedom in how they experience this RPG.
