Viktor Antonov, the visionary art director behind iconic games like Half-Life 2 and Dishonored, passed away at the age of 52. Marc Laidlaw, writer on Half-Life, confirmed the news on Instagram, describing Antonov as "brilliant and original," stating he "made everything better." Tributes poured in from across the industry. Raphael Colantonio, founder of Arkane Studios, highlighted Antonov's instrumental role in the studio's success and his inspiring influence. Harvey Smith, former co-creative director at Arkane, remembered Antonov's talent and his dry wit. Pete Hines, former Bethesda marketing chief, praised Antonov's ability to bring life and meaning to the worlds he created.

Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, Antonov moved to Paris before starting his video game career in the mid-90s at Xatrix Entertainment (later Gray Matter Studios). He rose to prominence as a key creative force behind Half-Life 2's iconic City 17 at Valve. His work later extended to Dishonored at Arkane Studios, where he co-created the distinctive city of Dunwall. Beyond video games, Antonov contributed to animated films Renaissance and The Prodigies, and worked at Darewise Entertainment.

In a Reddit AMA eight years prior, Antonov shared insights into his career journey, revealing his background in transportation design and advertising before finding a haven for creative risk-taking in the then-nascent video game industry. He described his early work on Redneck Rampage, highlighting the freedom artists had to create entire worlds in those early days.

Antonov drew inspiration for the dystopian City 17 from his childhood in Sofia, blending elements of Belgrade and St. Petersburg. He aimed to capture the unique atmosphere of Eastern and Northern Europe. Most recently, Antonov featured in Valve's Half-Life 2 20th-anniversary documentary, discussing the inspirations behind his work.
