Unfrozen Studio, the developers behind Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era, have unveiled further details about the intriguing Swarm faction, following its initial teaser. They've revealed the inspiration behind this unique castle, the evolution of the concept from "Inferno" to "Swarm," and the unfolding narrative within the continent of Jadame.
The Swarm's defining characteristic is its remarkable adaptability. Certain creatures possess abilities directly influenced by the opposing unit's level; the greater the disparity, the higher the damage inflicted. Others, like mantises, strategically choose from three distinct abilities each round. A fascinating survival mechanism allows creatures such as worms and locusts to consume corpses, facilitating both healing and empowerment—a skill even heroes can learn.
In Olden Era, the insectoid race, previously only briefly mentioned in Might & Magic 8, assumes the mantle of the demonic threat. While respecting established lore, the developers have infused the Swarm with elements of body horror and occultism, transforming them from a simple insect colony into a devoted cult serving a singular ruler. Each member is integrated into a vast collective consciousness, existing solely to execute their master's commands.
Gameplay revolves around the Swarm's "mono-faction" mechanic—using exclusively Swarm units maximizes their synergistic potential. Furthermore, Swarm troops can summon cocoons, their health directly proportional to the army's overall size. The resulting larvae provide temporary reinforcements, allowing for dynamic battlefield adaptations.
The Swarm's aggressive playstyle is defined by its creatures' ability to devour corpses for healing and empowerment, combined with unique abilities that shift based on enemy strength. This approach fosters direct confrontations and presents players with a novel combat strategy.
