Sucker Punch Productions aims to address criticisms leveled at Ghost of Tsushima by crafting a less repetitive experience in its sequel, Ghost of Yotei. The 2020 title, while critically acclaimed, faced significant backlash regarding its open-world gameplay.
In a recent interview with the New York Times, Sucker Punch acknowledged the repetitive nature of Ghost of Tsushima's open world. Creative director Jason Connell stated, "One challenge with open-world games is the repetition. We aimed to counter this by offering unique experiences." Ghost of Yotei, unlike its predecessor, will also feature firearms alongside the katana, adding another layer of gameplay variety.
While Ghost of Tsushima boasts an 83/100 Metacritic score, many reviews highlighted its repetitive gameplay loop. Several critics described the game as a competent but shallow imitation of Assassin's Creed, suggesting a more focused or linear structure would have been beneficial.
Player feedback echoed these sentiments. Many praised the game's visuals but criticized the repetitive enemy encounters and overall gameplay loop. The limited enemy variety was a frequently cited concern.
Sucker Punch is actively addressing this criticism in Ghost of Yotei, aiming to avoid repeating the mistakes of its predecessor. The developer also intends to enhance the cinematic presentation and visual fidelity, key elements of the series' identity. Creative director Nate Fox emphasized the importance of capturing the "romance and beauty of feudal Japan" in the sequel.
Revealed at September 2024's State of Play, *Ghost of Yotei* is slated for a 2025 PS5 release. The game promises players the "freedom to explore" Mount Yotei at their own pace, as confirmed by Sucker Punch's Sr. Communications Manager Andrew Goldfarb.
